Keep me Hydrated

Recent audits have shown that sometimes when our residents are less motivated and staff are not thier to guide and support adequate fluid intake, drinks are left untouched.

The UK is going though it's fourth heatwave (July 2026) and dehydration can cause physical deterioration through delirium which also has an effect individuals cognitive state. Avoid this by using an app that documents the amount taken by individual residents, provides data on the whole floor or unit and notifys the staff when drinks should be encouraged. Note: this is a version 1 and you may have electronic mechansims in place already. But give it a try and give me your feedback at contactdesk@dcpcsupport.info or rikki.lorenti2@gmail.com

dc&p News

Create Conversations.

Cognitive Stimulation Therapy identifies the need to "stretch your brain" to improve your cognitive reserve and functioning. And where better to use your communication skills is to ask open questions and elicite information from another. This information could support management of distressed behaviour or improve the relationship between those providing care and those receiving it. But also in leadership, and from a human factors perspective, healthy relationships can improve teamwork, so what about an icebreaker. These create conversations cards may well be a good start so take a look, and see if these can work in your situation Conversation Starters.

Tier 2 Training

Though dc&p is looking to promote Tier 3 training to make sure that our aspriring leaders are skilled to educate, facilitate and support their teams, I also offer a Tier 2 course that I piloted with St.Michaels Hospice on the connection between palliative and dementia care. It is called connected care linked to Skills for Healt. This programme (2 hours per week, either f2f or to a learnng hub) covers:

  • Context of Dementia
  • Person-centred care and identifying quality
  • Communication
  • Individual cognitive stmulation therapy
  • Safeguarding, DOLS and capacity
  • Consolidation.

The program will include the development of an improvement plan. Start/Stop/Keep/Carry Forward to link aquired knowledge to a practice situation
